Let it be said…I’ve always wanted to be in a rock and roll band. Not so much for the fame, or fans, or drugs and alcohol, or bad hair. But because it looks like such a rush to perform great music. And have folks visibly enjoy your craft.
Unlike being a dancer, where you perform to a sea of darkness with sporadic, audible coughs and farts, only to see your audience once you’re done. With sometimes mild applause if they’ve witnessed some “out there” modern dance. And believe me, I’ve done some of that too. Did I mention I once barked like a dog on stage?
And what kind of instrument would I play, you ask? Without question, to be part of the band, I’d play the drums. Though I’ve only taken 1.4 lessons, it still beckons me to find time to learn how to master the skin. Mr. B was the lucky recipient of a drum set from his uncle. Said Uncle works for a liquor distributor and scored an extra set to bring to Mr. B. Sure, it’s a low-end set, but it has everything he needs to bang out the rhythm for “We Will Rock You.”
Only, remember the liquor distribution part? Every single piece in the set is emblazoned with giant, screaming Jim Beam logos. I was able to turn some of the pieces around so when you look at Mr. B behind the set, he doesn’t look like he’s set up in a bar. It’s only a matter of time before he takes pride in those logos and turns the suckers around.
As for me, I’d hope I’d be the kind of drummer that gets the people going. In essence, I hope I’d look like this guy – the crazy Steve Moore:

This week’s song comes from The Verve Pipe, a band that has been featured on Kid Tune Tuesday before. While A Family Album was released years ago, it contains several awesome tunes that we enjoy still. Be Part of the Band is no exception.
Seeing as how The Verve Pipe was and is a legitimate rock band, “Be Part of the Band” has some street cred to it. I love how it encourages anyone to be in a band, no instrument necessary, and sing out loud. With the caveat that you don’t get a manager. Just yet.
And, oh yes, the drums are fantastic in this song. Worthy of some crazy arm gestures.
My favorite part of “Be Part of the Band” is the bridge, where the lyrics suggest the types of songs you can write, including a love song that gets rejected, turning that in to a frustrated torch song, singing to a crowd of fans as a disco ball twirls overhead. My kind of fantasy. Great. Song.
And I can totally see me circling my head with drumsticks and banging this song out. Can’t you?

Oh I’m shy to admit this but I was in a band once. I played the bass guitar but soon after that I got bored and tired with it so I decided to learn how to play the guitar. I did play the piano once too and also tried my luck at singing. They were worth the experience!
Awesome, Roxi! With a name like that, you’re almost required to be in a band. Did you guys perform at any gigs? What kind of band? I think that sounds like a blast.
I actually spent most of my childhood traveling with my parents and their band. I even wound up on stage with them from ages 5-17. Singing. I can play the guitar, but barely. I love love LOVE the drums! I even married a drummer…not that he plays anymore…or any of us. *sigh* the good ole days were awesome!
What a great story, April! With any band some of us would recognize? You’re like the Partridge family? I think that would be so neat, though I’m sure the travel can get to you. No matter what they choose, my husband and I have told the kids they’ll need to take up an instrument. It doesn’t matter if they’re good or bad, or if they even do anything with it. But so much research leads me to believe you can’t go wrong with musical education!
