Jonathon Coulton wrote a very catchy little diddy called “The Princess Who Saved Herself” for the Many Hands CD that benefits those affected by the earthquake in Haiti. He writes about his inspiration for this song here.
What do I love about this song? What do I NOT love about this song. As a mom who’s body physically rejected the notion of princesses a few years ago, the lyrics to this tune are empowering. This princess does not need anyone to come and save her. She is self-sufficient. A woman who knows what she wants (a whole cake!) and doesn’t (“Hey, Phillip, tell me if this sounds like a phone hanging up.”). And the comedic bit at the bridge? Totally my favorite part.
And the results:
MR B: Oh, I like this one!
MISS P: Princess! Does this song need anything more?
