New Music: Robbie Schaefer’s “You Are Beautiful”

It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of Robbie Schaefer’s.  The former afternoon DJ on Sirius/XM’s Kids Place Live has a knack for making folks feel special.

We were heartbroken in our house last winter to learn he was leaving his post at KPL.  But we were also impressed that he was moving on to do work that seemed like his calling.

Robbie Schaefer is now focusing his efforts on charity and humanitarian projects with his organization OneVoice.  This is same organization that launched the LaLaLove campaign last year that we made a massive paper maché heart for to raise money to provide children in Kenya with life-saving heart surgery.

OneVoice has a new campaign up and running, backed another song that pulls at my heartstrings.

Robbie Schaefer You Are Beautiful

The “You Are Beautiful” campaign seeks to connect children all over the globe while raising funds for three distinct OneVoice communities.  Their goals?  Help build a girls dormitory at the More Than Me Academy in Liberia; provide school supplies for the first elementary school in Francisco Laguna, Nicaragua; and contribute library books for children at the Laksh Farms School in India.

There are three ways you can join in OneVoice’s efforts for their “You Are Beautiful” campaign, and all proceeds benefit each of these communities.  First, you can buy a mirrored pendant kit that you assemble and give to someone you love.   Secondly, you can give a good ol’ fashioned donation, which is always appreciated!

But the last way to participate is my favorite.  You can download Robbie Schaefer’s song “You Are Beautiful” on iTunes.

Once again, Robbie Schaefer has delivered a song with a great message.  This time, the lyrics ring with the truth that with giving, love and being who you are, you can do amazing things.

Perhaps with other musicians, this lofty idea could feel too syrupy, but there’s no saccharine in the way Robbie sings “You Are Beautiful”, because it seems to come from a genuine place.  Robbie Schaefer could easily be singing about himself, as his music is full of light and love.

I love a tune like this, one that makes me reflect on my own kids and appreciate their pure awesomeness, to see their pure beauty.

This?  This could be the song I play when they’re having a rough day.  The song I should play to sing their praise when they feel proud of their accomplishments.  The tune I could crank when they experience heartbreak.  The one I blare on the day they graduate high school and send them out to make their way in to the world.

Well, let’s face it.  They won’t want anything to do with Mom’s old fogey music by then. But still, you get my point.

For under a dollar, and the purchase of a lovely song, you can help the lives of children all over the world.  Not a bad way to spend a buck, eh?  So, what are you waiting for?  Head over to OneVoice today and download “You Are Beautiful.”

Because you’re worth it.  Wait, wrong beauty campaign.  But still.  You are.

Robbie Schaefer and La La Love on Kid Tune Tuesday…

I do have to admit something here…I have a radio crush on Robbie Schaefer from Kids Place Live.  It’s very similar to the one I have on Peter Sagal from NPR’s Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me.  Neither of them are my type physically, so don’t go getting any ideas.  But the crush is more of a deep respect, admiration, and appreciation for their nerdy humor, their wit, and my sense that both are really nice guys.

We love listening to Robbie Schaefer and his Bandwagon show.  It’s our favorite time of day on Kids Place Live.  So much so, that we’ve actually called in to Robbie’s show more than once, have Facebook requested several songs, and have even coerced Robbie to give a shout out to the kids on their birthdays.  And with every request, Robbie is patient, kind, generous, and sounds like he genuinely enjoys hearing from his listeners  Ladies, is there anything more attractive than a guy who is nice to kids?  C’mon, who’s with me here?

I fear I’ve gotten off topic.

Back the the music.  I’ve featured one of Robbie’s songs on Kid Tune Tuesday before (“Sally Can I Walk You Home“). Out of all of Robbie Schaefer’s songs,  La La Love is by far my favorite of his tunes.  A song, simple and pure, travels the world and works its way in to the minds and hearts of the planet.  Filled with love.  It’s a beautiful song and musically it has a catchy melody, with a great beat and percussion behind it.  I think Robbie’s voice sounds stronger on this than on any other song he’s recorded for children.

You can stream this lovely song in its entirety, along with the lyrics, HERE.  Below, a teaser….

This gorgeous video is from the current LaLaLove fundraising campaign.  The folks at One Voice, Epic Change and Kids Place Live are teaming up and need your help to raise money to provide 10 kids in Kenya with life-saving heart surgery.  As a parent, I cannot even fathom having a child that needs something that vital and costly.

In essence, lalalove is an art contest. With a fantastic bonus of helping children in need.  To enter the contest, you first need to create a heart.  Any way you want.  Paint, drawing, macrame, basket weaving, you name it.  Then you take a photo of your heart and submit it to the contest at www.lalalove.org.  Once it’s in, you’ll get your own fundraising page where you can encourage your family, friends, teachers and anyone else you can think of to donate.

There’s not just one, but TWO winners!  One for the entry that raises the most money, and one that’s deemed the most creative.  And the best part?  Winners get a visit from Robbie Schaefer himself, along with fellow Kids Place Live host Absolutely Mindy, and a live performance by Robbie.  What’s not to like about that?

We’re busy making our heart, and when we get it up, we’ll let you know.  Why not make your own and join in the fun?

Robbie Schaefer on Kid Tune Tuesday…

If you own SiriusXM radio and you have kids, then you probably know who Robbie Schaefer is.  For those of you who have none or one of the above and don’t know this guy, Robbie is the late afternoon/evening DJ on Kids Place Live, the kids music channel on satelite radio.  He is by far our kids’ favorite.  Mr. B has called or Facebooked in to Robbie more times in the past year than I’ve ever called in to a radio my entire life.  And each time he does, Robbie graciously returns his requests.  I emailed Robbie for Mr. B’s birthtday, and he was generous enough to give Mr. B a lengthy shout-out and played his favorite song.  How can you not love a DJ like that?  Robbie always seems like a kind, compassionate, even-keel kind of guy, and it’s almost as if you can hear him smiling across the airwaves.  Not in a creepy or annoying I LIKE KIDS! sort of way.  But in a smooth Mr. Rogers kind of fashion.

Robbie Schaefer released a kids album in 2006  titled Songs for Kids Like Us and it contains some adorable and charming gems.  While “Chicken Lips” was a big hit in our household for a while, the latest fave is “Sally, Can I Walk You Home?”  A song about best friends wanting to help each other out and spend more time together.

Sally, can I walk you home?
It’s only three more blocks.
Three blocks down and back again.
We’ll count ‘em while we walk…
Three more blocks, three more blocks, three and three make six.
Three more blocks, three more blocks, we’ll count ‘em just for kicks.
Three more blocks, three more blocks, three and three make six.
Three more blocks, three more blocks, we’ll count ‘em just for kicks.

MR B:  Not as funny as “Chicken Lips”, but Robbie’s my buddy…
MISS P:  I like the name Sally!
