Grenadilla on Kid Tune Tuesday…

Grenadilla has this adorable little song called The Family Song. The lyrics are really sweet, and remind me of several things. The first thing it brings to mind is the first trip we took with Mr. B as a little insular family - no grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins; no weddings, reunions, etc. - to Hawaii. Mr. B dipped his feet in to the ocean for the first time, and the whole trip felt like a familial rejuvination.

The second thing this song reminds me of? The day we brought Miss P home from the hospital. We were all sitting around the dining table eating lunch, and out of no where, Mr. B looks at me and says “We’re a family!” And in my postnatal hormonal mess, I held back the temptation to weep openly and scare the living heck out of him. It was such a sweet statement. And true. Unfortunately, I can’t find a video or anything of this song, but you really should check it out on iTunes when you get a chance!

And the results:
MR B: Aw, Mommy, I like this one… four%20sippy%20cup Grenadilla on Kid Tune Tuesday...

Tangled on Kid Tune Tuesday…

Normally I try to shy away from too much commercial music. But the kids? They LOVE it. And lately, they’ve really been in to the music from the movie Tangled. I have to admit, some of the tunes are pretty catchy. While I still resist the idea of teaching my daughter the fairytale of a princess needing a guy to come and rescue her, the movie is cute and I’m glad that Disney has placed the good ole musical back into its repertoire.

There are several songs that Mr. B and Miss P like from this movie, but the one that keeps getting requested over and over again is “I’ve Got a Dream”. It’s the one that happens with the thugs in the Snuggly Duckling scene. Who doesn’t love the image of Brad Garret’s meanie turning in to a soft artiste? Extra toes! Puppet shows! Very fun…

And the results:
MR B: Dude, did he just say he has extra toes?! five+sippy+cup Tangled on Kid Tune Tuesday...

Jonathon Coulton on Kid Tune Tuesday

Jonathon Coulton wrote a very catchy little diddy called “The Princess Who Saved Herself” for the Many Hands CD that benefits those affected by the earthquake in Haiti. He writes about his inspiration for this song here.
What do I love about this song? What do I NOT love about this song. As a mom who’s body physically rejected the notion of princesses a few years ago, the lyrics to this tune are empowering. This princess does not need anyone to come and save her. She is self-sufficient. A woman who knows what she wants (a whole cake!) and doesn’t (“Hey, Phillip, tell me if this sounds like a phone hanging up.”). And the comedic bit at the bridge? Totally my favorite part.

Owl City on Kid Tune Tuesday…

This week’s Kid Tune comes to you courtesy of Owl City. They have this lovely little song called “To the Sky” that appears on the soundtrack to the movie Legend of the Guardians. I’m not entirely sure that it classifies as a kid song. But they play it on KPL and it always makes us wiggle in our seats and puts a smile on our faces. Mostly when I wake up in the morning with a kid song in my head, it’s usually something annoyingly grating. But this song? Yeah, this one makes me feel warm and hopeful…

And the results:

MISS P: This one is really fun to wiggle to. four%20sippy%20cup Owl City on Kid Tune Tuesday...

Introducing…Kid Tune Tuesday!

We listen to a boat-load of music around here. On my computer, in the car, from the boom box that Mr. B has appropriated and brought in to his room. I love that they have developed a love for music. Mostly we listen to kids music, either from stuff I’ve found on iTunes, or listening to Kids Place Live (from here on out known as KPL) on satellite radio. Miss P is still very much in the listen-by-repeat mode, which drives Mr. B crazy. That’s when I have to remind him of that time a few months ago when we listened to Europe’s The Final Countdown over and over again until our ears bled.

So, I’ve decided to launch a new aspect here on Full of it…

KID TUNE TUESDAY!

A glimpse of what we’ve been listening to, reactions, thumbs up or down. Perhaps a video or sound bite here and there. And, of course, I’m open to your suggestions as well!

We will be using a very developed, technologically advanced Sippy Cup Rating System. Depending on the song, each kid (or parent) might have their own rating, but in general the rating provided will be an average of the votes for the family. Ratings will be shown as follows:

= Meh, next song please…
two+sippy+cup Introducing...Kid Tune Tuesday! = Verdict might still be out on this one. I might need to hear it again to be sure…
three+sippy+cup Introducing...Kid Tune Tuesday! = Okay. If this song came on the radio, I wouldn’t turn it down.
four+sippy+cup Introducing...Kid Tune Tuesday! = I like this a lot, and will definitely request this on Repeat for a while.
five+sippy+cup Introducing...Kid Tune Tuesday! = Again! Again! Again! Peeeees!

Let’s kick this thing off with a favorite of Miss P’s, shall we? Caspar Babypants has some really great tunes that we hear a ton on KPL. For those that don’t know, Caspar Babypants is Chris Ballew, former front man from The Presidents of the United States of America. You know, those cooky guys that brought you “Peaches” and “Kitty“?

Well, Caspar Babypants has this adorable song called “Mister Rabbit“, and Miss P could listen to it a hundred times a day. In her defense, it’s an easy listen, a catchy tune, and it’s bright and cheery. Paul Westerberg recorded a version years ago, but I happen to like CB’s version better.

And the results:
MR B: While I liked it the first 10-20 times, now I’m quite sick of hearing this. three+sippy+cup Introducing...Kid Tune Tuesday!
MISS P: Mister Rabbit, Mama! More! five+sippy+cup Introducing...Kid Tune Tuesday!
