Lunch Money on Kid Tune Tuesday…

ktt2 Lunch Money on Kid Tune Tuesday...
It’s back!  Kid Tune Tuesday! I’d like to say it’s return was prompted by popular demand, though no formal requests have been made.  But it seems the kids have begun requesting Kids Place Live again in the car, and I welcomed the break from house music, David Guetta, and Taylor Swift.  Not that those artists don’t get played a ton around here still, but a chance in pace is nice.

The other reason it’s back is that Kids Place Live has started playing a song that we heard a while ago.  When I first heard Lunch Money‘s song “Spicy Kid” on a session of Rompus Room, I immediately wanted to download it, but it hadn’t been released.  I don’t know if this latest edition is in response to searches like mine, but I’m glad that “Spicy Kid” is finally back on the airwaves.

Lunch Money is a band from South Carolina, headed by the wonderfully quirky voice of Molly Ledford.  What I adore about Molly’s voice is that there’s a lilt in it, some kind of timbre that suggests she’s grinning from ear to ear when she sings (which she probably is).  That she’s in on the joke with the kid.  That she “gets” them.  Coupled with the indie sound of the band, it’s a combination that appeals to all age groups.  I heart bands like this.  Bands that make music I find myself singing when the kids aren’t around.

And then there’s “Spicy Kid.”  Found on Lunch Money’s 2012 album of the same title, this song seems like it was written about Miss P.  Of course, if you ask Miss P if she’s a spicy kid, she’ll give you That Look, the one that makes me dread the teenage years, and declare vehemently that in no way, under any circumstances, is she spicy.   Sorry, sweetie, but you just presented Exhibit. A.

Were you born with a mind of your own?  (I’m a spicy kid!)

Do you wish you had a microphone? (I’m a spicy kid!)

Saw you practicing your angry look.  (I’m a spicy kid!)

Man, I hope you use your powers for good.  (I’m a spicy kid!)

Then Mr. B will look at me with hopeful eyes and ask me “Am I a spicy kid?”  With those big brown eyes, asking that question?  Why yes, Mr. B.  Because you want to be spicy.  I love it…

What I love about the Lunch Money’s songwriting is that it’s written about and for children, but it’s by no means childish.  It certainly comes from a parent’s perspective.  One that sees the complex beauty of a young personality in bloom.  Peppered with quirky lyrics and melodies.  Sweetened with love and adoration.  It’s definitely spicy.

The other songs on the album provide similar flavor, humor and wit.  If you’re looking for something new to listen to this week, I highly suggest checking Lunch Money out!  You can stream Lunch Money’s latest album Spicy Kid in its entirety HERE.   Go there.  Now.

The Not-Its on Kid Tune Tuesday…

Okay, I’ve fallen off the posting wagon again.  And even worse, I’ve let this Kid Tune Tuesday thing go in to the witness relocation program.  That list bit, though, isn’t because I’m being lazy.  It appears that Mr. B has lost his interest in kid music.  He has found the light of house party and dance music, and doesn’t want to turn back.  And Miss P has happily joined him in Tween Music Land.  I’m not really thrilled to come in here and post about their love for One Direction’s , The Wanted’s , or their new-found appreciation of anything by Rihanna (RiRi, you really should do a guest spot on Yo Gabba Gabba).  And there’s not much of the kid-music stuff that my kids agree on.  If Mr. B thinks it too childish, he will vehemently put his foot down and request a station change.  And Miss P, by default of her age, can’t get an argument in either way, and is resigned to listening to Kids Place Live when Mr. B is not in the car with us.  So this might be the last of these posts for a while.

But today I bring to you one of my favorite songs that gets played on Kids Place Live.  The Not-Its are a great little band from Seattle.  Puppy Dog is by far my favorite song of theirs, though you really should check out their whole album.  And it’s got the right mix of kindie rock whimsy and rockin’ guitar riffs and drums to make it appealing to my little rock stars.  And the dog at the beginning and end?  Makes my kids long for a furry monster of their own.  Thankfully, we have Bubble Boy (a.k.a. a very allergic Daddy) to rule that out.

Unfortunately, I can’t find video of this ditty, but I highly recommend clicking on the song title link and listening to it on iTunes.

Charlie Hope on Kid Tune Tuesday…

As I was pondering what tune to present this week, I realized this would be going up on Valentine’s day.  A day for love!  Un jour pour l’amour!  (I’m pretty sure that’s totally wrong and wrecking the beauty of the French language, but my vocabulary is limited to things like colors, numbers, and body parts.  Instead of being correct, imagine me saying it like Pepe le Pew and you’ll feel much better.)  As soon as I got love in my head, I got a song about it in there, too.

Once again, this week’s song comes from hearing it on Kids Place Live.  God forbid I ever have to let my satellite radio subscription go!  Charlie Hope has a wonderful lilt in her voice that is so sweet and charming that I think I’d ask her to babysit my kids without a background check.  It took me a while to figure out where I knew her voice from, but I finally sniffed it out.  She sings on Caspar Babypants’ Mister Rabbit, the very first Kid Tune Tuesday I featured on here!  Fitting for Valentine’s Day, I’m showcasing her tune “One That I Love.”  What I like about it is that it’s upbeat and makes me feel good.  Not to mention that I turn to mush when I hear my kids sing it in the backseat.  What trickery!  Gotcha!  Made ya say you love me!  And it reminds me, like the song says, to show my kids and husband that I love them in small and big ways on a regular basis.

I hope I’m not stepping on any type of music feet if I do this, but I found a link (on another site that mentioned this was Charlie’s gift) where you can download this song for free by clicking HERE. And I hope this doesn’t end me up in music piracy jail.  Consider my incarceration a little Valentine’s gift…Mwah!

The Deedle Deedle Dees on Kid Tune Tuesday

ktt2 The Deedle Deedle Dees on Kid Tune Tuesday

Lately, we’ve been having discussions around our house about appropriate behavior. More specifically, how to act when you’re feeling angry or frustrated. And no, the answer is not hauling off and whacking your sister when she does or does not do something you do or do not want her to do. (Nor is the correct answer wanting to run screaming from the house, but that’s what wine is for). And leave it to music to help me teach this lesson.

The Deedle Deedle Dees have this adorable song titled “Ah Ahimsa.”  The writer of the song writes on their website that he came up with this song after working with a particularly wild class in the South Bronx who was having a hard time practicing nonviolence.  My kids love this song, and it opened the door to discussing Ghandi with my son.  What he stood for, how he practiced nonviolence and civil disobedience.  And now, when I see my son getting riled up, I will sometimes whisper “Ahimsa” and he’ll rethink his reaction a bit.  Any chance I can get to shake out my limbsa, I’m all for it!

Blue October on Kid Tune Tuesday Thursday…

ktt2 Blue October on Kid Tune Tuesday Thursday...

Okay, so I’ve let this slip a little lately, but it’s back!  This week’s song seems so fitting right now for me.  It comes from yet another adult band as well.  Why am I a sucker for the Big Kid songs that work well with the Little Ones?

Blue October hails from Texas (and let me just take a moment to tip my “I lived a nice portion of my life in Texas” cowboy hat to them) and I seriously doubt that, when they recorded this song, they had visions of it playing on children’s music stations years later.  But man, am I glad it is.  I get a little happier when I hear this song in the car.  It’s a helpful reminder that most things in life, the good and the bad, are temporary.
