As opposed to the Star Wars/Hero Factory/Ninjago testosterone thing for the boys, LEGO Friends appears to be the more lighter and dare I say, domestic, side of plastic construction. I know I sound as if I'm going off the feminist deep end here, but I have to say, I'm a little disappointed at the sets they have developed for young girls. LEGO tried, they really did. They've provided a vet, an inventors workshop, and a design studio, understanding that girls might be interested in things that are cerebral. But where are the really cool things? I guess that some kids would find bakeries, beauty shops, and houses cool. And the mini figures? They all have big long hair and boobs. Boobs! Why do toy manufacturers make toys for small children with breasts? Do any of their friends have them yet? God, I hope not. I dunno. I guess I was just hoping for more WOW factor and something not so...girlie? Or typical? Not just house and car sets made with pastel brick colors. Don't get me wrong, though, I'm sure we'll end up with a set of these before the year is out. If anything, it will be easy to distinguish these from her brother's Star Wars components.
Perhaps LEGO might have missed a huge market here. What ideas would you have suggested??

I think this one is amazingly cute and fun. It is something I would have loved as a little girl. However, I do think they need to widen their offerings for girls quite a bit. The boys get imaginary things and superheros, the girls get LIFE stuff. Offer the girls some things for the imagination and dreams too. Girl superheros, etc... Professions would be good too like maybe a vet practice with the animals too. Good post and something worth talking about!
ReplyDeleteWe were at ToysRus and saw a live size fireman made with legos....he was NOT pink....I guess now they need to make a life size Princess for US!

Michael Ann- Don't get me wrong, I do think they're cute. But you hit the nail on the head with your comment about boys getting imaginary things. I guess I was just hoping for something more, I dunno, fantastical? They DO have the vet practice.
ReplyDeleteBecky Jane - All those life sized things are amazing! Why not a life-sized ballerina?
Courtney - Thanks for stopping by!
How cute! I'm not really disturbed by the boob thing cause my daughters play with Barbies and half the time their lying on the floor naked with their legs in the air. I have to pick my battles around here. But I know my oldest went through a phase where she was obsessed with Legos every time she'd see them (usually the Lego table at the doctors office waiting room). I was excited when I saw Legos and accessories in pink and wanted to get her some. I also saw Lincoln Logs all diva'd up and wanted to get her those too, but my hubby veto'd the idea. I think he likes seeing all the naked Barbies laying around. Lol! No, I'm just joking. He was actually concerned that her obsession with them would be too short lived to waste the money. Knowing my daughter the way I do, I'm sure his concern is a valid one.

Rosann - I know that most dolls have boobs, I just feel like these figures are shaped and dressed to look like younger girls, y'know? My daughter is obsessed with getting her dolls undressed as well. I DID cave and get a small set of these that I plan to give to Miss P as a reward for something. At least it multiplies the number of female minifigures in the house.
ReplyDeleteReanaclaire - We've been to the Legoland in San Diego. Pretty amazing! I'll email you soon...
