Imagine the scene, if you will:

Both kids have gotten up way too early for the day.  We’ve rejected eaten breakfast, colored, made pillow forts, and everything else we can think of, yet it’s still only 7:30am.  I’m at my wits end and need a break from the screaming/fighting/whining.

My solution?  We all climb in to Mr. B’s bed (clearly the best bed in the house, with it’s cozy and warm chamois sheets, and the still-firm mattress occupied by my lightweight son) and play a game of Moles.  Digging down in to the heavy comforter and pretending to sleep, it’s as close as I get to quiet Nirvana some days.

A friend of mine, the mother of two energetic boys, told me that when she needs them to be quiet, she suggests that they all pretend to be girls – sitting and reading books, brushing hair, etc.  That, my friends, is pure brilliance!

What’s your pseudo-break tactic?

  1. “Pretend to be girls” LOL I suggest a game of hide and seek and while they hide I take a power nap!

  3. I love the moles idea! Usually, Jacob will grab his doctor kit and give me a “check up” while I lie there. When he was little(r), I used to lie there while he rode his race cars on my back- massage and peace, all in one.

You will notice that most of my ideas include me lying down, lol- I’m lazy.

Hope you’re having a great day!

  4. For some reason, LR’s favorite game is ‘Nap’, so I get to either a) be the one who is ‘asleep’ while she pats me or b) she pats stuffed toys to ‘sleep’ – either way, my eyes glaze over and I drool a little bit.

  6. Thanks for the birthday wishes yesterday, btw. Is it wrong that I was wishing for one of your “Mole” moments? The only birthday present I got was the ability to sleep in til 8. Woohoo! Lol.

  7. RJ – ooooh, I like that one. I’ve hidden pretty good before and it took them 5-10 minutes to find me.

Courtney, glad I could give you a good chuckle!

Sorta – I’ve tried the ‘drive cars on Mommy’s back’ thing, but it never lasts for long. The Check Up, though, that’s a good one. At least you got to sleep in on your birthday!

R – I like the Nap Game. Or, at least, I DID, but now P just pries open my eyelid on a painful level.

oomph – I wish I could even just REALLY go to the bathroom with the door closed!

  11. Oh I love your thought of having boys pretend to be girls! Amazing how young those ideas work… got a great chuckle this morning, remembering the days of two energetic boys wondering where in the world I would find the energy to keep up!

Thank you for sharing parts of your journey – remember that every other mom really does understand!

  13. I play the silent game. We all have to go about our business in utter silence for as long as possible (no sound emanating from the mouth area at all). The one who keeps it up the longest wins! I usually have a small piece of candy or other tiny prize on hand for the winner. FYI, I usually am the first to break the silence!

  14. Hi Samantha! Thanks for stopping by. We’ve tried the silent game for dinner (usually our most rambunctious time of the day), but I like the idea of doing it other times.
